The Sociology Department at the University of Washington is a research-focused department that specializes in theoretically driven, empirical research addressing a wide range of topics and covering various levels of analysis. We prioritize disseminating the results of our research in scholarly articles and books, in our teaching, and in other public fora. Our research tradition combines three distinct elements:
- The discovery of new empirical facts
- The identification of sociological mechanisms to account for these empirical regularities
- The systematic assessment of social theories
While specific pieces of research may emphasize one of these elements over another, as a department we value each element of this research process, and seek to support a portfolio of activities that reflects our commitment to rigorous, systematic study of social phenomena.
