Recommended Timeline

First Year:

Required Elements:

  • Complete required first year coursework: GRDSH 501 TA Preperation (and attend the TA Conference in the week prior to classes starting), Soc 510 (Theory), Soc 508 (Logic of Social Inquiry), Soc 504 (Applied Social Statistics), Soc 505 (Applied Social Statistics), Soc 506 (Methodology: Quantitative Techniques in Sociology) and Proseminar (Soc 501A, 501B, 501C)
  • Completion of a minimum of 3 graded electives (9 graded credits minimum)

Expectations:

  • Identify MA Advisor
  • Develop MA Topic
  • Explore collaborative research projects

Second Year:

Additional Coursework

  • Finish required Sociology graded Electives as needed
  • Consider taking a SOC 502 or another course that focuses on preparing to teach your own independent courses
  • Plan out coursework for the Ph.D. Training Plan
  • MA Thesis: Plan and complete required coursework (including 9 credits of SOC 700), writing, and research
  • Complete MA / Advance to Ph.D. Program: Summer of year 2 or Autumn of year 3

  • Write MA Paper, defend if possible
  • Join collaborative research project
  • Take teaching practicum
  • Investigate funding options
