Graduation Celebration

Sociology Graduation Celebration 2024: Wednesday, June 5, 2024.

Note: The below information has not been updated from 2023, however, most of the information will remain relevant for 2024.

We are so happy to welcome our 2023 graduating Sociology majors, their families and friends to the in-person 2023 Sociology Graduation Celebration! Our event will be held indoors on Wednesday evening June 7, 2023 from 7-9pm in the Auditorium at Meany Hall, on the UW Campus.

The program at Meany will include:

  • Pre-show with graduating student slides from 6-7pm
  • Formal Procession of Faculty and Graduating Students
  • Chair’s Welcome
  • Department Awards
  • Voices of Sociology (video presentation)
  • Hooding of Ph.D. students and Recognition of all Graduates

Covid Recommendations

The Sociology department recommends that all guests be fully vaccinated and boosted. Masks will be available for graduates who would like one; audience members who would like to be masked will need to bring their own.

Eligibility

Students who graduated in Autumn 2022, Winter 2023, and students who have graduation applications on file for Spring 2023 and Summer 2023, are eligible to participate.

Academic Apparel

The Sociology Graduation Celebration is a formal event and all graduates are required to wear Caps & Gowns. Students may purchase their academic apparel on the Commencement website starting May 3rd. Even if students are not planning to attend the UW Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, June 10th, they still need to purchase the academic apparel through the UW Commencement website. We recommend that students place their orders early.

Signing Up to Participate

Registration for the 2023 Sociology Graduation Celebration is separate from the registration for Commencement. All eligible graduates will be emailed a link to the Sociology Graduation Celebration on Friday morning, May 5th. Registration will close on Monday, May 22nd at 8AM.

Our event is ticketed (there is no charge for tickets) and graduates request tickets when they register for the Sociology event. Guest will NOT be permitted into the Meany Center auditorium without tickets.

Parking

We are aware of at least three (3) Graduation Celebrations taking place on Wednesday, June 7th so we expect parking to be EXTREMELY scarce on that day in the Central Plaza Garage. To make it less challenging (especially if any graduates and/or guests have mobility issues), we strongly recommend that graduates purchase:

  • Pre-paid parking permits

When Sociology graduates purchase their Cap & Gown from the Commencement website using the Registration/Order form, they can also purchase pre-paid parking tickets both for Commencement and for the Sociology Celebration. WE STRONGLY URGE YOU TO DO THIS!

  • Pay-by-Phone

If you are willing to take chances, attendees and guests can use the Pay-by-Phone app to pay for parking the day of the event. NOTE: download the app ahead of time—there is no cell service in the Central Plaza garage! The location number for the Central Plaza Garage is 123211. There is no guarantee that there will be tickets available when you arrive at the Central Plaza Garage.

  • Public transportation

For public transportation options, check the information on the Commencement website

Undergraduate Students

In order to receive an undergraduate degree, students need to complete a graduation application with an advisor. Make an appointment by emailing asksoc@uw.edu and fill out an application for graduation with an advisor.

International Students

Do you have guests who are traveling internationally to attend your graduation? See the UW Commencement site here for resources for guests who are flying in from different countries.
