Ph.D. candidate Yuan Hsiao has been awarded a Presidential Dissertation Fellowship by the University of Washington's Graduate School. This prestigious award recognizes Yuan's exceptional promise as a scholar, and will provide him with a quarter of fellowship support. Yuan's research investigates various aspects of the relationship between digital media and political behavior, including network effects, psychological incentives, and organizational structure. His work has been published in Social Networks, Information Communication & Society, New Media & Society, and PloS one.
Hsiao was the 2018 recipient of the Sociology Department's Costner Award for his paper, "Understanding digital natives in contentious politics: explaining the effect of social media on protest participation through psychological incentives."
